Free speech for me but not for thee

Presentation on Net terrorism kicks off Holocaust Education Week

The Internet is a deadly tool for terrorists.

With access to 1.3 billion people in the world with Internet connections, terrorists can use the Net to recruit, raise money and even give orders.

“You only need to be able to convince just a few, and you don’t even need a group, you just need one. One individual can wreak havoc and cause numerous deaths,” said Leo Adler.

Adler, a Toronto criminal defence lawyer and a member of the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on National Security, will be speaking at Dalhousie University tonight. His topic is Digital Terrorism and Hate, but the lecture is the kick-off to Holocaust Education Week.

“Fifteen years ago there was only one hate site on the Internet, and now there are over 8,000,” Adler said in a phone interview Sunday. “The Internet has many wonderful things about it but it also has a dark side.”

Canadian law is effective in rooting out hate sites, but the Internet is an internationally unregulated medium. Adler said an international accord is required to decide the use of the Internet.
